Colin Trodd speaks to the British Art Network

Held at Watts Gallery, Artists’ Village in Compton, near Guildford, in October 2017, Dr Colin Trodd worked with the British Art Network and delivered his seminar on 'Artists as Reformers in Britain c.1850-1914'.

The event explored how Watts and other British artists projected their aesthetic authority into social and political fields, and Trodd delivered his paper 'Love and Life: G. F.Watts, Social Activism and the Religion of Humanity' which argued that the 'perception of art as moral struggle, not the avant-garde idea of creating an alternative reality, seems to have been at the heart of Watts’s project, a project where the ‘Master’ presents himself as a diffident, self-suppressing teacher of Universal Humanity."
